While convalescing from a broken wrist, I found a unique little caffè in the tiny village of Lumby about 15 minutes from my home. Having a passione di caffe, a direct tie to Italy (mia sorella), an immediate friendship with the owner and a bit of time on [one of] my hands ... I went to work on a bit of marketing for their unique and authentically Italian caffè.
The resulting logo is a cheerful patriotic image, the espresso cup a reflection of both their product and the chairs in the caffè. Yesterday Caffè Mazzega was named “Best New Business of the Year 2011” by the Lumby & District Chamber of Commerce. www.caffemazzega.com
I have been juggling preparing for a show, commercial art and even celebrated a son’s wedding so my blog posts have been few and far between of late. But I have paintings on the easel and on the drying rack so I will keep you posted.
One of the balls I juggled this month was a request for logo design - an area of commercial art that I really enjoy, especially for great causes. This premier annual August Festival will team up with the Vernon Jubilee Hospital Foundation for a Festival Pledge Drive to help fight Breast Cancer in Vernon! read more ...
Although I am a rower, I know little about Dragon Boating and it’s history so researching revealed some fascinating boating rituals from ancient times like sacrifices and violent clashes! I could not resist incorporating some of this new found knowledge into the concept of the design. Read about Dragon Boat on Wikipedia.
To illustrate the logo I used brush and ink on parchment, giving it a traditional style yet the excitement and movement that I wanted for the Festival which you can only achieve by hand. I draw all my logos by hand for this reason, and always in black and white first - if it doesn’t work in black and white then it’s back to the drawing board! I then embrace technology; scan, refine and colourize.
I hope you had a wonderful Easter Weekend!
I was honoured to be requested again this year to design race wear for the Canadian Team attending the 2010 World Outrigger Sprint Championships in New Caledonia. The logo above I designed for the WOSC in 2008.
I am busy completing a couple of paintings for a jury process as well as the WOSC race wear ... when is Christmas again?
