After a busy few months of painting, it is nice to get back to basics. Pure, honest but far from simple; drawing is the foundation of a good painting. All the rendering in the world cannot hide a mistake in drawing, just as a cornerstone would be sorely missed in the foundation of a building. So, not only is it nice to simply sketch, frankly, it is essential to every aspect of good art.
Although still wet, I squeezed in another painting to include in Gallery Odin's "village" gallery during the Silver Star Wine Festival this coming weekend. Remember ... always consider the artist burning the candle at both ends before you touch a painting in a gallery (:
I wanted a special bowl to put these beauty Okanagan cherries in, so I stopped by the Vernon Community Art Centre. What I found was this delightful little bowl of Shannon Boyd's, an instructor there. Apparently a test piece for glazes and not available for purchase, Shannon kindly lent me the "denim blue over nutmeg" bowl which, being a complimentary colour, made the cherries rich and delightful.
These little balls of fluff are the second in my "Chicklets" series. They are just so delightful scurrying in and out of the lilies, cheeping, scratching and running after Mother hen.
If you are in Vernon this weekend come on out to the Cowboy Festival at the Historic O'Keefe Ranch. Along with the many things going on at the ranch on Saturday, I will have paintings for sale and will be joined by blacksmith artist Doug Alcock.
The Silver Star Wine and Food Festival is fast approaching - August 8, 9th and 10th, for which Gallery Odin sets up a temporary Gallery in the centre of the village. Mountain guests are free to visit the gallery during the festival which will feature work by six local artists who will also be painting outdoors in and around the village on Friday and Saturday, myself included. The paintings created over the two days will be donated by the artists and those original fine art pieces will be [silent] auctioned on Saturday evening to raise funds for the Vernon Jubilee Hospital.
